Leadership and management are two of the more frequently used terms related to the operation and success of any organization, regardless of its products and/or services. This statement is so common and/or stated in so many variances it has become known as a common axiom. Most students will approach this topic from the limited viewpoint of corporate experience which--while valid--is self limiting. My focus is to expand our recognition of the situational environment in order to more appropriately identify the synergy between the two concepts of leadership and management. "According to Yukl (2013), "There is a continuing controversy about the difference between leadership and management" (p.25).
Is there a difference between leadership and managing and if so; is the dichotomy of leadership and management qualitatively different and/or mutually exclusive? In your answer briefly share the organizational perspective or experience that forms the framework of your response and be sure to support your supposition with peer review documentation.
